Tombstone reading @83Y 8M 26D; the owner of the land in Shiffler Cemetery at its beginning.5

During the evening of 11 Apr 1849, J and M Moss of PA, who were migrating west, halted their team and covered wagon at the Benjamin Shiffler home and asked shelter for themselves and their month-old baby son, Alpheus.  The child died that night, and Mr. Shiffler offered a sandy knoll across the road, which he owned, for the burial, the first in what became the Shiffler Cemetery.  A small stone was erected (Alpheus, son of J and M Moss, died 12 Apr 1849, age one month, eight days.  first buried in this yard) but many years later, the stone deteriorated and was replaced with a new one by the trustees of Jefferson Twomship.12,13

The story of the first burial was related to Mr. Van Gundy by Jefferson Twp Trustee, Lawrence Watson; this story was written in 1964 by Ed Flinn, whose wife, Ruth Flinn, was a great-granddaughter of Benjamin Shiffler.13

Location of the Shiffler Cemetery: E part SW 1/4 Sec 27 North of Pulaski about 1/8 of a mile N of CR H on SR 127 on the left side of the road as you are going north.  The name of the cemetery is Shiffler Cemetery (Jefferson Union Cemetery).

Notes as told to Richard Cooley from Paul Van Gundy, 1974:

Benjamin Shiffler built the first red brick house in Williams Co, OH in 1844 on his land 1 1/2 miles north of LaFayette (now Pulaski) on present US 127.13

Small tornado upset tombstones in Shiffler Cemetery on 20 June 1912.  It blew the tombstones in its path and scattered some of them in all directions and broke many.  The farms of Sylvester Oberlin, E B Opdycke, and George Shiffler were also visited by the storm and outbuildings and trees were destroyed.  No one was hurt and no livestock lost.14

Decoration Day of 1873 was celebrated in Shiffler Cemetery where 18 soldiers' graves were decorated, 4 from the War of 1812 and 14 from the Civil War service.

Still living in this area are two descendants of the original Shiffler family of Benjamin Shiffler, those being Mrs. Ruby A. Smith and Mrs. Ruth E. Flinn of Bryan.15

His obit states that Benjamin Shiffler a formerly active and well-known citizen of Jefferson Twp died Sunday afternoon at the residence of his son-in-law William Wineland, 3 miles north of Bryan.  He was about 84Y.7
