 (Journal 12 p115 - 13 June 1883; p144-145 - 30 Nov 1883; Roll 38)

Compiled by Pamela Pattison Lash

The couple was married in Wms Co on 4 Apr 1876 (Marriage V4 p457).  In the 1880 Springfield Twp federal census, p682A, the Leavitts were listed as Oliver 27 OH, Sophia 25 OH, and Olive 1 OH.  The couple had a child John O. b 6 Nov 1878 in Springfield Twp (Birth V1 p118); perhaps the child was misnamed in the record.    Sophia’s parents were John and Rachael Bower Sloan of Springfield Twp, found in the 1860 federal census, p72 as John Sloan 42, Rachael 43, William 17, Louisa 12, John W. 10, and Sophia 5, all born in PA.  Oliver was the son of Gideon and Mary Sickles Leavitt of Coschocton Co, OH and Sussex Co, NJ, respectively.

Sophia charged Oliver with extreme cruelty.  She received $700 alimony and custody of their daughter Rachel Olivia.  She also sued Edwin Langley who held $250 of her money.  Edwin was a Civil War soldier from Coshocton Co, OH who moved to Wms Co and married Clarissa Leavitt, Oliver's sister in Oct 1865.  A divorce was granted.
