 | Margaret Schmitt (b.
11-8-1830, Alsace- d. July 4, 1912, Williams Co., OH) came to Ohio from
Alsace with her parents George and Mary (Foltz) Schmitt about 1841.
Margaret married Jacob Wingard in 1849 and they settled on a farm in Centre
Twp for the next 45 or more years. I would like to learn more
about Margaret and her family. |
A cousin Jacob Wolf came to
Williams County about 1855 from Melsheim, Alsace, France at age 17.
He is in the 1860 census, he served five years in the Civil War and settled
in Shawnee Mound, MO on a farm. He refers to Margaret as his cousin in
letters but I don't know if they are related through the Schmitt
or Foltz family.
There is a George and Salome
(Rinchel/Rinkel) Schmitt (or Smith /Schmidt) also in Williams County but I haven't determined definitely
if he is related to Margaret and family.
There were a number of families
who came from Alsace in the 1840's and settled in Williams County. I
haven't found any relationship yet of our Schmitt family to any of
them.
Thanks for any help with this Schmitt puzzle in Williams County. I am happy to share information with
other family researchers.

I am writing a history of the Cooney area and am searching
for information on the W.A.Conkey family who lived in the Conney,
Ohio area during the first half of the 20th century. They raised Duroc hogs
and Percheron horses. Their address would have been Edon, except in the
teens, when it was Montgomery, MI. It seems that for a while a lot of the
folks who lived close to the state line had Montgomery or Camden (MI.) for
their address, even though they were in Ohio. I have read the 1978 volumes
of the Williams County history, but I could not find anything. Hoping you
can help me. I also have read McLain's "The Hills of Home", as
well as the 1880's Williams County histories. Any other leads would be
appreciated. |
